About the winemaker

“I bought a small estate in 2010 with 60 hectares of old, native vines. We renovated the estate into a modern winery, but we certainly also have an eye for the traditional aspect! For example, I harvest my grapes manually, I only use native grape varieties and wild yeasts for the wines and I let the wine mature for 6 months in oak barrels for extra body and complexity.”

Unusually, Moreto has the starring role in this blend, setting the tone - an old-fashioned feel, with a flavoursome, mellow palate. Savoury oak and cured leather notes lead on the nose and palate. Rich gusty dried fig and spicy, bay-leaf-accented currant fruit flesh it out going through. Ripe mouth-coating tannins lend depth, whilst persistent mineral acidity brings length of flavour.

The grapes used for this special anniversary wine are moreto, trincadeira and alicante bouschet. The moreto is a grape that used to grow a lot in Portuguese vineyards, but you don't see it that often anymore. This grape has a thick skin to protect itself from the sun. It does well in the somewhat higher and cooler vineyards. Here it matures gradually and produces dark red fruit and enormous concentration. The trincadeira, which ripens early, has spicy tannins and also gives the wine its hint of eucalyptus. The Alicante Bouschet is a Teinturier grape (one of the few grapes with red flesh) and can withstand the blistering heat very well. This grape ripens early in the season and gives the wine color and dark fruit tones.

De ‘normale’ Bojador beviel altijd goed (****), maar deze jubileum editie overtreft de verwachtingen. Heerlijke Portugees!
