What is non-alcoholic wine and how is it produced?
Let's start with the most important thing: alcohol-free wine is made by first producing "regular" wine. Through a process called reverse osmosis, alcohol can be removed from it. This preserves most of the flavors and aromas, but with little to no alcohol, typically less than 0.5%.
Which grape varieties are commonly used in the production of non-alcoholic wine?
This process can be applied to any grape variety, but the best results are achieved with aromatic grape varieties such as Riesling, Chenin Blanc, or Sauvignon Blanc. Alcohol-free wine comes in all colors and varieties, whether it's sparkling, white, rosé, or red. However, we have unfortunately not been able to find a red alcohol-free wine that we were enthusiastic about. Apparently, this category is still challenging to make taste good without alcohol.
What is the difference between non-alcoholic wine and regular wine in terms of taste and texture?
Wine gets its texture or mouthfeel from sugars and alcohol. By removing one of these two, it's possible that the sugars become more pronounced. There's also a chance that this wine, due to the removal of alcohol, may feel considerably lighter.
