About the winemaker

The winemaking brothers Albert and Nikola Benvenuti are the calling card of Croatian viticulture. Their Malvasia is a layered, complex wine full of rich fruit, nuts and herbs with which they have been convincing wine journalists for years. "Benvenuti is not only our name, it also means 'welcome'. Our father was a pioneer for quality viticulture in Istria and all of Croatia. His passion went so far that everyone was welcome to come and taste it. That's how he came up with the name, as an invitation for people to discover his wines. Today we continue this passion, following his example. For example, we use traditional grape varieties and we still mature all our wines in (used) wooden barrels."

Tangy citrus, nectarine and floral nose. The palate is surprisingly long, charming, and has great direction and focus.

When you think of wine growing, you may not immediately think of Croatia. Yet the Istrian wine region has a rich wine-growing history, in fact it is one of the oldest wine regions in Europe. This history even goes back to before the arrival of the Romans. It was the Greeks who in the 6th century B.C. planting the first grapes on this peninsula. The region is hilly with an extremely long coastline. This means that there are many different microclimates in the Istrian wine region, which means that many different grape varieties feel at home here. The Malvasia is one of the oldest species that is still grown here, it was probably planted here by the Greeks about 2,600 years ago. Although modern-day Malvasia is no longer quite the same grape as it was back then, due to evolution, it is still a widely planted grape variety in Slovenia, Croatia and even Portugal.
