About the winemaker

"La cigüena" means stork in Spanish. This wine is a tribute to the stork that flies daily over our vineyards and perches on her nest at our neighbours across the street. And Encima? That, in turn, is an amalgamation of my daughters' names; Encina and Marina!"

9-/10 De Grote Hamersma
Zijne heiligheid godello.

Bierzo, Spain
Bierzo is a small wine region in northern Spain, just above the border with Portugal. Since the area was granted Denominacion de Origen (DO) status in 1988, winemakers there have stopped making wine from imported grape varieties and switched entirely to authentic varieties. For red this is mencía and for white godello. The godello is an aromatic, versatile variety. Like chardonnnay, the grape can behave like a chameleon, depending on the style the winemaker is aiming for. The better specimens can develop nice acidity and smoky minerality.
