Douro, Portugal
The Douro is perhaps the most dramatic wine landscape in Europe: steep, man-made terraces, rugged slopes, and the winding river that gives the region its name. Grapevines have been planted here for centuries, originally mainly for Port, but nowadays increasingly for powerful dry wines as well. The heat of the day is offset by relatively cool nighttime temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen fully without losing their freshness. Not the easiest conditions, but ideal for producing intense wines.
