About the winemaker

“At FitaPreta (black ribbon in Portuguese) sustainable viticulture and innovation are central. The best example of this is photographing our vineyards from the air with infrared cameras to see where the grapes grow best. But when it comes to winemaking, we do not shy away from traditional, labor-intensive and 'old-fashioned' methods: we pick and select by hand and use oak barrels.”

90/100 Robert Parker
It seems, in fact, a bit more distinguished these days, no longer merely a value wine that flirts with 90 points, but one that I might expect to hit that level pretty regularly. This is lovely, dense, nuanced and vigorous. It has a very serious feel, big fruit and a lingering finish. In its youth, it seems pretty terrific. There is obviously not much track record for this relatively new blend of vineyards, but it certainly seems poised to age reasonably well. We'll be a bit conservative in terms of the drinking window, but there doesn't seem to be a rush to dive into it. That doesn't mean you can't, as it drinks pretty nicely—fresh enough to drink on its own but stuffed enough to hold up to foods. This is, needless to say, a very nice and intriguing value.

Alentejo, Portugal
Alentejo is located in the south-central part of Portugal. The name is a corruption of the Portuguese 'além do Tejo', literally: 'over the river Tagus'. Although the area covers a third of the land area, only 5% of the population lives there. And only 5% of the region is covered with vineyards; you see more olive groves, cork oaks and wheat. The biggest risk to wine growing is the heat in July and August when temperatures rise above 40 degrees Celsius. That is why the winegrowers have an arsenal of native grape varieties at their disposal that can withstand this heat. This Ancestral is a so-called Fieldblend. This means that there are different grape varieties in the vineyards, but we treat them as one and the same. For this wine, the indigenous grape varieties are Roupeiro (40%), Rabo de Ovelha (16%), Arinto (8%), Tamarez (8%) and Alicante Branco (8%).
