About the winemaker
“At FitaPreta (black ribbon in Portuguese) sustainable viticulture and innovation are key, for example our wine cellar is insulated with cork and we photograph our vineyards from the air with infrared cameras to see where the grapes grow best. But when it comes to winemaking we don’t shy away from traditional, labour-intensive and ‘old-fashioned’ methods: hand picking and selection and some wines are made in oak barrels.”

Alentejo, Portugal
Alentejo is located in the south-central part of Portugal. The name is a corruption of the Portuguese 'além do Tejo', literally: 'across the Tagus River'. Although the area covers a third of the country's surface, only 5% of the population lives there. And only 5% of the region is cultivated with vineyards; you see more olive groves, cork oaks and wheat. The greatest risk for wine growing is the heat in July and August when temperatures rise above 40 degrees Celsius. That is why the wine growers have an arsenal of native grape varieties at their disposal that can withstand this heat, such as Aragonez, Castelão and Trincadeira.
