Weinviertel, Austria
The Weinviertel is Austria's northernmost and largest wine region. Here, between the Danube and the Czech border, it is truly Grüner Veltliner country. As much as 50% of the vineyards are planted with this grape. Although it may not be the most well-known region, it is certainly a fascinating one. Many winemakers are small family businesses that have been making wine for generations. Each family has its own terroir and its own unique winemaking method. As a result, many different styles of Grüner Veltliner come from the Weinviertel, ranging from aromatic to light and fresh. But red wines from the Weinviertel are also becoming increasingly popular. For instance, Blaufränkish, Zweigelt, and Pinot Noir are now also planted there. With the arrival of a new generation of winemakers, the Weinviertel is truly a region to keep an eye on!
