About the winemaker

"We started making typical Cape wines here in 2003. Our philosophy is to show the complexity and typicity of the grape variety as well as our special terroir. The origin and 'feel' is most important. I have therefore thrown myself wholeheartedly into two grape varieties. Viognier and syrah. Both originate from the Rhône valley, but both extremely well suited to the Atlantic climate here at the Cape."

4.5/5 Platter’s Wine Guide

Elgin, South africa
The relatively cool Elgin Valley is just 70 kilometres east of the bustling Cape Town. The vineyards are surrounded by mountains, so they allow the sea breeze to blow well into the vineyards, literally blowing fungi and disease out of the way. In addition, the vineyards are at quite a high altitude, between 200 and 300 metres on average, sandwiched between the mountains that provide the vineyards with cooler nights. This produces grapes with lovely fruit aromas, fine natural freshness and remarkable finesse. Viognier thrives here. The grape is naturally low on acids, but the cool nights allow it to develop a lot of freshness and tension, without losing its distinctive explosive aromas.
