“Wat hebben voetbal en wijn met elkaar te maken? Op het eerste gezicht vrij weinig, maar hier zijn het de twee hoekstenen van onze cultuur. De liefde komt samen in La Casematte. Samen met mijn goede vriend Andrea Barzagli (voormalig voetballer) beheren we de wijngaarden, waarin vooral inheemse Siciliaanse druivenrassen staan aangeplant. Dit kleinschalige project is vernoemd naar de twee Kazematten (militaire verdedigingswerken) die nog op het terrein liggen.”

“This is a new listing from Le Casematte. The 2017 Nocera Nanuci offers you a unique opportunity to taste a native variety from Sicily in its purest form. The Nocera grape is used across the northern tip of Sicily near Messina and in Calabria, and it is naturally high in acidity. That freshness comes through, as does the pretty dark color that is associated with this variety. The aromas are tight and very floral in nature with wild rose as a protagonist. There is also a savory and salty element to the flavor profile that, along with the low pH, makes this wine excellent for those rare, fatty Sicilian meat dishes such as frittula: beef byproducts fried in lard. Fewer than 4,000 bottles of this debut wine exist. Congratulations, Sabbatino, on the birth of your youngest!” (2017 vintage)

De wijngaarden van Gianfranco en Andrea liggen op zo’n 500 meter boven zeeniveau in de regio Faro. Hier heeft de wind vrij spel, wat zorgt voor een uniek microklimaat. De nocera is een inheemse druif. Hoewel deze druif ondertussen een zeldzaamheid is geworden, was deze vroeger wijdverspreid. De nocera bezit een fijne dosis donker fruit en een verfijnde zuurgraad. Bij Casematte worden de druiven biologisch geteeld en staan ze aangeplant als zogenaamde bush vines; kleine struiken die stevig geworteld staan om de verkoelende, maar soms harde wind te kunnen trotseren. Het bladerdek beschermt de druiven tevens tegen het felle zonlicht.
