About the winemaker

"We Portuguese are proud of our indigenous grape varieties. Our wines really have their own character. This is not only because of the aromatic grapes, but also because of the special natural conditions here in Setúbal. The terroir is unique, thanks to its location between the Tagus and Sado rivers. Over millions of years, these rivers have brought the sand that makes up the soil here. The climate is Mediterranean and, thanks to the proximity to the ocean, it can be quite humid here, but the sea breeze ensures healthy grapes."

South of Lisbon lies the Setúbal peninsula. The area is best known for its fortified sweet Moscatel de Setúbal, but is also great for producing dry, full-bodied wines. In the 1950s, the Portuguese government started a major colonisation project here. Many grapevines were planted and the 'colones' (the farm workers who moved to this region) were given a free piece of land to cultivate. Many farmers united in a cooperative, in which they could innovate jointly and with government support in viticulture and new cellar techniques. Fernão pires is the most widely planted white grape variety in Portugal. This versatile variety has a distinct floral aroma with notes of orange zest, lemon and clove. These match very well with the blossominess of muscatel. Arinto is possibly descended from riesling and has the unique characteristic of maintaining good acidity in warm climates, which gives the wine balance and structure.
