Marof 20th Anniversary Cuvee

For our anniversary, winemaker Uroš created a blend from a selection of different barrels. He combines oak-aged Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with a small proportion of fresh Welschriesling. The result is a layered, elegant wine for the dinner table.

About the winemaker

Although we have only been working with winemaker Uroš for a few years, his wines made an immediate impact. When we first introduced Marof, we did not expect our entire team to become so enthusiastic about it. An anniversary cuvée without his wines was therefore simply not an option in our view.

“Slovenian with an Austrian touch. Uwe Schiefer, an influential winemaker in Südburgenland, has taken this estate under his wing and had the insight to appoint the driven young winemaker Uroš Valcl. He then gave him free rein to craft wines according to his personal preference — and they are very much to our liking. We also know his reds (from Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, of course) and his Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc cuvées, but here he has — together with the less common Welschriesling and a splash of Pinot Grigio (10%): created a delightful quartet blend. Specially for Grapedistrict’s twentieth anniversary, this wine pushes every boundary. Pineapple and peach with a touch of crème fraîche, lychee, Meyer lemon, a hint of spice, and grapefruit crunching over chicory. And yes: bitters, very fine ones. And acidity: delicate. Daring, layered, and successful.”

Although the Goričko region has an age-old winemaking tradition, it was long somewhat the neglected child of Slovenian viticulture. Historical and cultural circumstances, along with its remote location, meant that its wines were hardly consumed outside the region itself. By the 1960s, only a few vineyards remained. The vineyards that did survive were planted with grape varieties that were very popular in the United States, though there were exceptions, such as in the village of Mačkovci. Here, traditional plantings of Blaufränkisch, Sauvignon Blanc, Silvaner, and Welschriesling were still found. Even in the 1980s, when Slovenian winemaking underwent a major quality revolution, this region remained a blind spot. It wasn’t until 2007 that entrepreneur Stane Polanič, together with winemaker Uroš, founded Marof Winery right here, gradually awakening this sleeping beauty.
