“As a child I helped out at my parents' winery. At the time, I planted vineyards with my mother. If I could, I would now do all the work in the vineyards myself. Because only by standing in the vineyards every day can you get a feeling for the vines, the vintage and ultimately the end result; the wine."

"Spannende, onalledaagse blend. En we komen ook al niet elke dag in Prekmurje, Slovenië. Wat treffen we daar? Onder andere zweigelt. Eentje die tot jaloerse blikken moet leiden in Oostenrijk. Vanwege de kwaliteit. En wellicht omdat Uwe Schiefer, toongevend wijnmaker in het Oostenrijkse Südburgenland, juist dit domein had ontdekt als een perfecte plek om nationale trots, de zweigelt, aan te planten. Plus het inzicht te hebben om de gedreven jonge wijnmaker Uroš Valcl aan te stellen. En deze de vrije hand te geven om wijnen naar zijn persoonlijke voorkeur te maken. En die vallen zeer in de smaak. Hier liet hij ook blaufränkisch en merlot het feestje meevieren. Met slingers en al. Cassis en bramenconfiture. Het zoet-hartige van hachee: het behaaglijke, het weldadige, het rijke, het langzame, het vlezige, de laurier, de kruiden. Zuren omcirkelen roostertoontjes."

Prekmurje, Slovenia

Although the Goričko region has a centuries-old wine-growing tradition, it was a bit of a neglected child of Slovenian wine-growing for a long time. Historical, cultural circumstances and the isolated location meant that the wines were hardly consumed outside its own region. In the 1960s there were few vineyards left. The vineyards that remained were planted with varieties that were very popular in the United States, of course there were exceptions such as in the village of Mačkovci. The traditional Blaufränkisch, Sauvignon Blanc, Silvaner and Welschriesling were still planted here. Even in the 1980s, when Slovenian wine growing experienced a huge boost in quality, this region remained a blind spot. It wasn't until 2007 when entrepreneur Stane Polanič, together with winemaker Uroš, started Marof winery here, of all places, and slowly but surely woke up this sleeping beauty.
