About the winemaker

“Neragora was founded in 2002 when I discovered a piece of wild and untamed land in Bulgaria, near the village of Chernogorovo, which means "Black Forest" in Bulgarian. Drawing on my years of experience in organic agriculture, I initiated an ambitious project. I enlisted Italian oenologists with expertise in organic winemaking and paired them with young Bulgarian winemakers. In 2004, the first vines of the native Bulgarian grape variety mavrud were planted, and since then, everything has been progressing rapidly.”

Mavrud is one of the oldest grape varieties in the world, known for producing robust, complex wines filled with cherry fruit and spices. The grape owes its name to the legend of the historical warrior Mavrud. In ancient times, winemaking was prohibited, but Mavrud's mother secretly grew grapes in her backyard. When he drank his mother's wine, the warrior Mavrud became invincible. The king of Thrace heard of this and decided to lift the ban on winemaking. The mythical grape was named after the brave warrior.
