About the winemaker

Although the Douro Valley is one of the world’s most historic wine regions, we found it difficult to find a partner that truly matched what we were looking for. That changed when we discovered Quinta da Pedra. Their small-scale approach and modern vision immediately felt like the perfect fit. Their wines are unmistakably Douro, yet offer exactly the kind of drinkability we were searching for. Since 2021, they have become an essential part of our portfolio.

9/10 points - De Grote Hamersma
"João Pires is Portuguese and has worked for several renowned port houses. In 2007, he met Matt Grant, a winemaker who had gained experience in Australia’s own Barossa Valley. As it turned out, the partnership was a perfect match, leading to the founding of their own Douro estate in 2009: Quinta da Pedra Alta. We were already familiar with some of their other red wines, which clearly made a strong impression, judging by their high ratings (9-). And we are equally happy to celebrate with this festive release. To mark 20 years of “Grape,” they bottled a blend of four grape varieties that feel completely at home in the region — and in our tasting glass as well. Blackberries, forest berries, cassis, sun-warmed dark earth, and black olives. The oak is not yet fully integrated, while the tannins still provide plenty of grip. Time to hang up the party garlands."

Douro, Portugal
The Douro is one of the world’s most impressive wine regions, located in northern Portugal about 100 kilometers from Porto. In this rugged, mountainous landscape, the steep slate slopes force the vines to root deeply in search of water and nutrients. The strength of the region lies in its traditional blends. Touriga Nacional often forms the backbone, providing deep color and structure, while Touriga Franca contributes refined aromas and floral notes. Tinta Barroca adds ripe, generous fruit, and the rarer Tinto Cão brings freshness, acidity, and aging potential. The unique combination of these grape varieties and the region’s extreme climate results in wines of remarkable concentration and a mineral tension that is unmatched anywhere else in the world.
