Voerzio Martini Derthona Timorasso

Piemonte , Italy
Timorasso
The ancient Timorasso grape variety was once nearly extinct, but is now the rising star of the wine world. Sommeliers discovered why: the combination of apricot, passion fruit, and nuts makes this the perfect dinner wine, with ageing potential.

About the winemaker

Together with our uncle Gianni Voerzio, we carefully craft the finest wines here in La Morra, the heart of the Barolo D.O.C.G. During the growing season, we prune the vines by hand up to five times to keep the vineyard yield low and ensure that only the best grapes remain and can ripen beautifully and evenly. We also harvest by hand and then transport the grapes in small crates to prevent rot and oxidation. This care and attention are certainly evident in our wines!

In eastern Piedmont, around the town of Tortona, wine was made from the Timorasso grape for centuries. In the 19th century, it was known as one of the region's most important white varieties, prized for its strength and ageing potential. But after the devastating phylloxera plague and the advent of more productive grapes, Timorasso almost completely disappeared from the vineyards. Only in the 1980s did a revival begin, led by a few tenacious winemakers who rediscovered old vines on forgotten slopes. They were convinced that Timorasso could be Piedmont's white answer to the famous red Nebbiolo wines. Now, 40 years later, they are finally, slowly, beginning to be proven right. More and more people are discovering: Timorasso is incredibly delicious!
