About the winemaker

“Winemaking has been in our blood for generations. That's why I make traditional wines, the way they used to make them. In my own way, by the way. That is completely organic, with organic fertilizer and only some copper and sulfur to keep the worst pests in check. I am blessed with old vines with old grape varieties that have been forgotten by the great Rioja houses due to their fragility.”

92
92/100 punten - Tim Atkin MW
"A highly unusual, unqiue blend of Maturana with 40% Mazuelo, this is another intiguing wine from Miguel Martinez showing the classic graphite and blackcurrant notes of the former and the acitity and slight wildness of the latter. Flora land fine, with underlying austerity and grip and a peppery finish." (2018 vintage)

88/100 punten – Robert Parker
"An unusual blend of Mazuelo (Cariñena) and Maturana Tinta (Castets), the 2015 Cerro Sojón showed the pyrazine aroma’s of the Maturana, which provided herbal aromas over a core of red and black fruit and some toasty aromas that reminded me of a Carmenere. He palate is quite austere, with fine-grained tannins an the flavors from the French grape. It might improve with some more time in bottle. Some 1,500 bottles produced, It was bottled in autumn 2016." (2015 vintage)

Rioja, Spain
The Rioja is divided into three different regions: Baja, Alta and Alavesa. Bodegas Ojuel is located in Rioja Alta, the transition zone between the continental climate of the hot center of Spain and the Mediterranean climate of the Rioja. The vineyards are located 800 meters above sea level on hills that catch a lot of wind. Here it says Maturana tinta en mazuelo. The maturana is one of the allowed grapes in Rioja, but there are virtually no winemakers who actually have it. It is a somewhat atypical Rioja grape with blackberry and blackcurrant juice. Fun fact: the grape is genetically the same grape as the French grape trousseau (Jura) and the Portuguese grape bastardo. Mazuelo is a better-known grape (also known as carignan or cariñena). It is a real powerhouse with powerful red fruit and relatively high acids and tannins. A unique Rioj blend. Wood-matured for the typical 'Rioja feeling'.
