About the winemaker

“My brother and I grew up in our parents’ restaurant. So it’s no surprise that we both ended up in hospitality. My brother became a chef, and I became a sommelier. Eventually, I was even named the best sommelier in Spain and the second-best in the world. When my brother asked me to make wine together, I didn’t have to think for a second. I knew right away: this is the project we need to do.”

9/10 - De Grote Hamersma
From childhood onwards. Bruno Murciano grew up in his parents’ restaurant. While his brother eventually chose the path of a chef, he decided to become a sommelier. And that craft suited him perfectly. He was named the best sommelier in Spain and the second-best in the world. A reason to raise a glass, thought his brother, who by then had also stepped out from behind the stove. Wine it had to be—specifically, the kind they themselves enjoyed drinking. So, there was nothing else to do but start making it themselves in their birthplace, Caudete de las Fuentes—a place where the bobal grape, especially for reds, thrives beautifully. But look here, the whites also shine, presented with the Murciano Fivefold M-factor: macabeo, malvasia, moscatel, merseguera, and marisancho come into play. With grapefruit, grapey fruitiness, and orange zest, with dried apple on a bed of tarragon and rosemary—there is saltiness, there is sweetness, there is acidity, there is juiciness—and all together, Las Blancas intrigues right down to the very last sip.

As early as the 5th century AD, the Phoenicians planted the first vines in the area around Valencia. Yet the DOC was only established in 1957. The region stretches along the entire Mediterranean coast south of Barcelona. The soil here is a mix of limestone, sand, and clay. From the warm beaches, the terrain gradually rises, and the climate takes on more continental characteristics. Bruno Murciano’s winery is located in Utiel-Requena, at an altitude of 850 to 950 meters above sea level. This gives the wines an unmistakably fresh style. The old vineyards also turned out to contain a unique mix of ancient, little-known but native grape varieties. It is precisely this special blend of grapes that allows Bruno Murciano’s winery to embody the rich history and character of Valencia.
