About the winemaker

"Our estate has a rich history dating back to 1530, when it was founded by Guillaume Jouclary, then consul of Carcassonne. Our family took over the château in 1969, after which we focused entirely on making the finest wines."

Pays d’oc, France
Overlooking the towers of medieval Carcassonne, at the foot of the Montagne Noire, lie the vineyards of Château Jouclary. Here, fresh Atlantic influences and the sunny Mediterranean climate meet. This interplay, locally known as the “Vent d’Est”, gives the wines their characteristic balance between ripe fruit and tension. The vineyards are part of the Languedoc, one of the oldest and most diverse wine regions of France, where wine has been cultivated since Roman times. The Via Aquitania once ran through this region, along which wine was transported to the rest of the empire. Later, in the Middle Ages, viticulture flourished further around cities such as Carcassonne, thanks in part to monasteries and local nobility who cultivated the vineyards. Today, the Languedoc is known for its enormous diversity of terroirs: from limestone hills to clay and loam soils, with variations in elevation that provide cooling and complexity to the grapes. Around the Montagne Noire, moreover, that higher altitude ensures tempering nights, allowing the grapes to ripen beautifully and evenly.
