About the winemaker

"Born and raised in Bolgheri, winemaking is in my blood. In 2008, I decided to transform our family business from a mixed farm into a winery. Not that my father and grandfather didn't make wine, but they never quite dared to take the plunge. With respect for the environment and a generous dose of creativity, I now make modern wines that showcase what makes this region so special."

The Dario Di Vaira 2019 Bolgheri Superiore (made with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot) is fermented in cement vats and later aged in oak for 18 months before going into bottle for another 12 months. The wine exhibits an exciting playlist of aromas with blackberry, baking spice, allspice, Indian cumin and autumnal leaf. There are delicate hints of rose water and dried lavender bud that emerge with time. This blended Tuscan red offers opulent fruit, chalky tannins and power.

On the Tuscan coast, south of Livorno, lies Bolgheri, a region that only recently made its mark on the world map. Until well into the twentieth century, this was primarily agricultural land, with grain fields and olive groves instead of vineyards. Only in the 1940s did things begin to change, when Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta experimented with Bordeaux grapes on his Tenuta San Guido estate. His wine, Sassicaia, proved to be a sensation decades later: elegant, powerful, and surprisingly fresh for such a warm region. This discovery put Bolgheri on the map as the place for true Super Tuscans: wines made from international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which developed their own identity in this maritime climate. The influence of the Mediterranean is crucial: cool nights, a steady wind, and sandy soils give the wines balance, ripeness, and finesse. Today, Bolgheri has become one of Italy's most prestigious wine regions.
