Domaine de La Fontainerie Vouvray
Chenin blanc
At this estate, dating back to 1712, Catherine and her daughters age the wines in a unique "cellar": the cave beneath the vineyards. This results in a classic Chenin Blanc full of apple, melon, and honey notes with a mineral finish.

About the winemaker
"We're actually taking a very minimalist approach. For us, the vineyards are the most important thing; that's where our strength lies. We do all the work in the vineyards by hand, pruning regularly and keeping yields low. This keeps the vineyards incredibly healthy, and we can make fantastic wines without having to do much work in the cellar."

Loire, France
Vouvray is located in the Loire Valley, on the banks of the Vienne River, just east of Tours. The area is known for its Chenin Blanc wines, a grape variety that has been cultivated here for centuries. Viticulture in this region dates back to the Middle Ages. As early as the 11th century, wines were produced here and traded far beyond the region. Exports to the Netherlands began in the 16th century: Dutch merchants were particularly interested in the fresh, pure wines that aged well and, above all, transported well. Thus, Vouvray gained international renown early on, and the region developed a tradition of quality-oriented viticulture that is still visible today. The vineyards here are primarily situated on chalky clay soils, often containing oyster and shell fossils. These soils give the wines their characteristic minerality and finesse. The cool climate of the Loire preserves acidity and balance, making it, after Champagne, the second-highest-quality region for producing sparkling wines. Fortunately, fantastic still wines are still being made, such as this one from Domaine de la Fontainerie.
