About the winemaker

“We make our Vouvray according to the méthode traditionnelle. This means that the wine is made like champagne, so with a second fermentation in the bottle, which creates the fine bubbles. Brut means dry, but with a little residual sugar for a pleasant roundness. Our grapes grow on a soil of clay and pebbles. You can really smell the mineral aromas, they develop in the glass to citrus fruits and roasted almonds."

Only one grape variety is allowed for Vouvray; the white chenin blanc. This is mainly planted on chalky plateaus of tuff. The number of wine types made here is surprisingly large. Most producers make a Vouvray Sec (which can be very dry), a demi-sec and, in sunny years, a moelleux (sometimes from overripe grapes and lusciously sweet). In addition, there are sparkling Vouvray Brut (made according to the méthode traditionelle). This Vouvray Brut is a fine interplay of fresh acidity on the one hand, but also elegant summer fruit on the other.

I have a not so secret love affair with Champagne and also of still whites from the Vouvray region in the Loire. This Gilet is the only other sparkling I genuinely enjoy. Good fruit notes and honey like a vintage.
