Domaine de Pieblanc Gigondas Pallierouda

Rhone, France
Grenache, Syrah

About the winemaker

“I grew up in Cornas, in a family of bon vivants. My brother had found his passion early; he became a chef. For me it took a little longer. After a career in telecom, I decided in 2014 to, like my brother, focus on things that really make life more fun. That is why I returned to the Rhône Valley to make real terroir wines.”

Stemmier style, this has freshness and detail. Powerful and intense, without excess body or alcohol, the bright acidity and herbal complexity make for a detailed and intriguing wine which finishes long.

Rhone, France
In recent years, the Gigondas region has emerged from the shadow of its neighbor Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A number of characteristics can be identified for this. Because although the wines from Châteauneuf can still reach an incredible level, many producers have been struggling with a surplus of alcohol and tannin in recent years. The microclimate in Gigondas is slightly fresher and milder, while retaining many of the characteristics that come from the Mediterranean climate and the bright Provencal sun. The second factor has to do with the growers. In recent years, a number of talented winemakers have settled in the region and approach things slightly differently. For example, Matthieu ripens his Gigondas partly on amphorae and partly on wood. This not only gives the wine a beautifully round profile, but also layering and surprising freshness. As a result, more and more sommeliers are choosing wines from Gigondas. It is therefore only a matter of time before this area takes over the status as king of the Southern Rhône.
