About the winemaker

"My father, Alois Gross, was already a winemaker when, in 2004, he received a handwritten letter from Vienna. An elderly woman was offering him her small house and vineyard in Gorca, Slovenia. She wanted the family property to be in good hands and, more importantly, for wine to be made there again. At first, my father hesitated, but after just one visit to the little hill covered in vines, he knew enough: he was sold!"

Stajerska, Slovenia
Å tajerska is located in the northeast of Slovenia, along the Austrian border, and together with the adjacent Steiermark in Austria forms a historic wine region. For centuries, this part of Slovenia was part of the Habsburg Empire, and that influence can still be seen today in the grape varieties, wine style, and winemaking approach. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times but was particularly shaped in the 19th century by Austrian winemakers. After World War II, the region became part of Yugoslavia, and the focus on quality diminished somewhat, but since Slovenia’s independence in 1991, Å tajerska has redeveloped into one of Central Europe’s most dynamic wine regions. The hilly vineyards reach up to around 400 meters in altitude, with soils of limestone, marl, and volcanic rock. The cool climate ensures slow ripening and the preservation of fresh acidity—ideal for crisp, aromatic grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Furmint (Å ipon).

Een van de lekkerste witte wijntjes die ik heb geproefd. Mocht hem proeven op de wijnproeverij in Grapedistrict in de Jan Evertsenstraat en was verkocht. Hij is droog en vol, intens en fris. Alles tegelijk eigenlijk. Aanrader!!!
