Istenic Brut Rose
Bizeljsko sremic
, Slovenia
When Janez Istenič made his first bottle of bubbles in 1968, Slovenia did not even exist as an independent wine-producing country yet. Inspired by Champagne, he did not let anything stop him, resulting in this fantastic vintage rosé.

About the winemaker
“My great-grandfather Janez decided to establish his own winery after an internship in the Champagne region. In the village of Stara Vas, he bought an old farmhouse with a tiny vineyard of 0.1 hectares. That wasn't much, but at the time, farmers still had to sell their wine in bulk to the state-owned company. Because sparkling wines undergo a second fermentation in the bottle, he believed this was not possible. As a result, he became the first winegrower allowed to sell his wines under his own name. This success eventually gave him the opportunity to buy more vineyards and ultimately even build an entirely new winery.”

Bizeljsko sremic, Slovenia
In eastern Slovenia lies Bizeljsko-Sremič, a small wine region on the border with Croatia. Here, sunny days, cool nights, and calcareous soils produce wines with fresh acidity and juicy fruit. The region is known for its unique ‘repnice’, centuries-old underground sand cellars where wine was formerly stored and still ages today. The winemakers of Bizeljsko-Sremič primarily produce crisp white wines from grapes such as Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, as well as refined red wines from Modra Frankinja (Blaufränkisch). At Istenič, they also added the local Rumeni Plavec and the French Pinot Noir. And it is precisely from the latter that they make this fantastic sparkling rosé.
