About the winemaker

"Actually, our winery is not in the Hemel-en-aarde Valley at all, but in the Hemel-en-aarde Ridge. It has a slightly different climate from the valley. It is rainier here and there is almost always a cool wind. The rain comes in handy because unlike most vintners in South Africa, we do not irrigate. Our vines may produce less fruit per hectare as a result, but the quality is so much better. And the better the fruit, the better the wine."

Hemel-en-aardevallei, South africa
The Hemel-en-aarde Valley is part of the larger Walker Bay district and is part of the Cape South Coast region. It is a green region located right on the coast, right where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. It has an oceanic climate with cool influences from the ocean and constant soothing ocean breezes. The soil consists of clay and limestone, which holds water well - a blessing in increasingly arid South Africa. Winemaker Christo Kotze is lucky his winery is located in a very rainy stretch, just outside the valley. Here it rains more often, so unlike many of his colleagues, he has decided not to irrigate anymore.
