About the winemaker

"I am the fifth generation winemaker and made my first wine at 17. In 2017, I started my own project. This project is completely different from classic bodegas like my family's. My goal is to make unique, authentic and innovative wines from old quality vineyards. No excessive use of wood or other fuss, but pure wines. I do this together with a young talented team at our modern and welcoming bodega."

Jancis Robinson:
"... the story that is still being written includes the young, talented, dynamic, and very promising Javier San Pedro Ortega. We might say he is destined to become one of the great rioja winemakers. He comes from the fifth generation of winegrowers and his family owns Bodegas Vallobera. Despite this legacy, he decided to start his own project, and in 2017 Bodegas Javier San Pedro was born."

White Rioja is not something you see very often. Usually you get full-bodied red wine from this beautiful area in northern Spain. Most white Rioja is made from viura. Javier, as usual, is nicely stubborn and also uses malvasia and the white(!) tempranillo. This grape is a spontaneous mutation of the blue tempranillo, a freak of nature. A very pleasant flaw, though, especially in this blend. The Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region. The bodegas are mostly large and mainly focused on producing full-bodied red wines with quite some (exaggerated) use of wood. However, among this tradition, innovation can also be increasingly discovered. Javier is one of those young guys who is successfully doing things completely differently.
