About the winemaker

Our family combines historic vineyards with a keen eye for quality. We operate practically organically, but haven't opted for certification, and we harvest all the grapes by hand. Fermentation also uses natural, proprietary yeasts instead of additives. The wine is then aged in used French oak barrels and large foudres, often sourced from top Burgundy estates. This gives the wines their elegant, soft structure.

91/100 Robert Parker
“There's a new label and image for the Altos de la Hoya, which comes from ungrafted Monastrell selected from plots at 830 to 840 meters above sea level on sandy limestone soils. The dry-farmed and head-pruned vines have an average age of 45 years. The Monastrell is complemented by 5% Garnacha and fermented in 10,000-liter stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured 50/50 in 500-liter barrels and 6,000- and 10,000-liter oak vats for six to eight months. The wine has notes of ripe black fruit, Mediterranean herbs and a spicy, creamy and smoky touch from the oak. It's juicy, round and fleshy, with 14.5% alcohol and good balance and almost unnoticeable tannins.”

Jumilla, Spain
Jumilla is a region in southeastern Spain. The region became famous in the 19th century when the phylloxera plagued Europe. Jumilla was one of the few regions immune to this pest, prompting even the French to come and buy up all the wine. Jumilla experiences very hot summers, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius not uncommon, but the gentle Mediterranean breeze brings a cooling breeze. These are the perfect conditions for Jumilla's absolute star: the monastrell (or mourvèdre, as the French call it). This grape loves warmth and produces wines that are powerful, spicy, and full of dark fruit, yet with surprising elegance.
