About the winemaker

In the historic Szekszárd wine region, Schieber is one of the youngest wineries. We've spent the past few years renovating the cellar, replanting the vineyards, and converting to organic viticulture. We want to show that fantastic wines can still be made in this ancient region.

Szekszárd, Hungary
This historic wine region, Szekszárd, in southern Hungary, is an hour and a half's drive from Budapest. The rolling vineyard-filled landscape offers views of the famous Danube River and the dramatic Alföld Plain. Viticulture here dates back, unsurprisingly, to Roman times. A marble sarcophagus dating back to the 1st century was discovered in this region, richly decorated with depictions of viticulture. Even during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century, wine cultivation was permitted here. This was unique, as the Ottomans were Muslim.
