About the winemaker

“The history of Vinos de Arganza dates back to the 15th century, when it was owned by a noble family from the region who possessed wineries and vineyards. Eventually, in 2003, Victor Robla took over the winery together with his wife, Ángeles Varela. Her family, incidentally, is no stranger to winemaking. She can trace her own family tree back over 500 years of involvement in viticulture in this region.”

91 punten - Wine Enthusiast
"Aromas of blackberries, raspberries and a touch of saddle leather emanate from the glass. A sheath of velvety tannins comes wrapped around dark-berry flavors joined by notes of crumbled sage, butterscotch and violet. The satisfying finish is marked with a note of cranberry."

The landscape in Castilla y León is not particularly dramatic, characterized mainly by rolling plateaus with vast fields of grain and the occasional flock of sheep. This Mencía comes from a single vineyard, the Finca Cabanela—a small, high-altitude plot on limestone and slate soils, planted entirely with vines aged between 100 and 120 years. As a result, the wines are extremely concentrated yet retain a lovely freshness. Winemaker José then ages the wine for 12 months in oak barrels, giving it its beautiful, smooth texture.
