About the winemaker

“Viticulture has been in the von Oetinger family since 1828, but it was not until 1966 that Robert von Oetinger laid the foundation for what would later be called Weingut von Oetinger. When I took over the winery I decided to break with tradition. Instead of making wines with residual sugar, I wanted to show that dry wines are fantastic. At the beginning the other farmers laughed at me, but the press and sommeliers soon became enthusiastic. Then I knew my choice was the right one.”

91/100 James Suckling
This has plenty of minerally, crushed-stone aromas with flowers and lemon juice. The palate has a sleek feel with elegant, fresh-citrus flavors.

Riesling is the most coveted grape in Germany, perhaps even in the world. This grape should be among the arsenal of every experienced sommelier. This grape knows how to combine a dose of mouth-filling fruit with peak acidity to take many dishes to a higher level. This is a top-class Riesling and falls under the VDP classification under the heading 'Erste Lage'. These are real premium Riesling wines, in which you can really taste the specific terroir of Rheingau. Grapes for 'Erste Lage' wines are always picked by hand and often come from a single vineyard. You can compare these types of wines with, for example, a Premier Cru in Burgundy. You also have the “GG” (Grosses Gewächs), comparable to grand cru. 80% of Achim's values have this status. As a result, he downgrades some of his wines, to show that he wants to create an accessible style.
