About the winemaker

“Our winery has a long history. The estate was founded in 1330. In the meantime it has changed hands a number of times, but my family has been at the helm for a number of generations. The next generation is also ready because my daughter now also works in the company. It was also her idea to use a small dash of sauvignon blanc in this blend, for even more freshness.”

Languedoc, France

The name pique-poul literally translates as "pricks in the lip" and refers to the typical high acidity of the grape. This old grape variety is known for producing typical, fresh wines, despite high temperatures in the south of France. As early as the 16th century, wines made from this grape were extremely popular in the French capital Paris. This popularity continued during the 17th and 18th centuries. This lasted until the arrival of the phylloxera pandemic, which paralyzed the entire French wine industry. The picpoul turned out to be very sensitive to the insect, causing it to become extinct. Fortunately, unlike phylloxera insects, picpoul vines can thrive in sandy soils, which became their last bastion against extinction. It is therefore no surprise that picpoul is only found in coastal vineyards, which gives the wines their typical salty taste. It is no coincidence that grape and region have the same name: It is the only wine region in France that is named after a grape variety.
