Domaine Jessiaume Volnay

Bourgogne, France
Pinot noir
Volnay is known as the place for the ultimate red Burgundies. Nowhere else does the Pinot Noir grape show itself from such a floral, elegant and at the same time complex side as here. Winegrower William is therefore very happy with his small vineyard of 0.8 hectares.

About the winemaker

“At Domaine Jessiaume we make a modern style Burgundy. For example, we work completely organically, all the work in the vineyards is done manually, we only use our own yeasts and we only add sulphites for bottling. We are also very careful with the use of oak barrels, the use of wood must be subtle. This makes our wines lively, layered and exciting.”

Volnay is a picturesque village in the Côte de Beaune. It is best known as the place where the most elegant Pinot Noirs in the world are produced. The French themselves prefer to describe it as the “most feminine part of Burgundy”. Volnay is located on the hill of Chaignot, high in the Côte de Beaune, on a narrow and steep slope that seems to fight for space for the vines. The hill is oriented slightly differently from the rest of the area, so that the vines are more south-east facing instead of east. The vineyards are located between two famous neighbours: Pommard and Meursault are just a stone’s throw away. The limestone and clay soils give the wines their typical minerality. The semi-continental climate, with warm summers and cool winters, is ideal for ripening the grapes.
