About the winemaker

At Domaine Jessiaume, we make modern-style Burgundies. We're fully organic, all vineyard work is done by hand, we use our own yeasts, and we only add sulfites before bottling. We're also very careful with our oak barrels. The use of wood must be subtle. This makes our wines vibrant, layered, and exciting.

94/100 Decanter
The colour is a fairly deep garnet, and the aromas of plum, blackberry and mulberry seem riper than last year, with hints of smoke, spice, and earth adding nuance. There is impressive density on the palate, and supple but firm tannins. The grapes are from a 0.26ha parcel of old vines on the border with Pommard, but the wine shares little of Pommard's tannic heft.

Volnay is a picturesque village in the Côte de Beaune. It is best known as the home of the most elegant Pinot Noirs in the world. The French themselves prefer to describe it as the "most feminine corner of Burgundy." Volnay is situated on the Chaignot hill, high in the Côte de Beaune, on a narrow and steep slope that seems to fight for space for the vines. The hill is oriented slightly differently from the rest of the region, causing the vines to face southeast rather than east. The vineyards here are nestled between two famous neighbors: Pommard and Meursault, just a stone's throw away. The limestone and clay soils give the wines their characteristic minerality. The semi-continental climate, with warm summers and cool winters, is ideal for ripening the grapes.
