Ilurce Rioja Joven
Winemaker Amador Carra takes a different approach than many of his neighbors. He makes a smooth, light-style tempranillo. His vineyards are located quite high, which gives his Rioja a freshness that makes it irresistible.

About the winemaker
"Bodegas Ilurce is a true family business. We are now the 4th generation at the helm of our winery. Our great-grandfather bought the small winery where we grew up in 1940. Eventually, in 2010, we traded our beloved family home for a modern version, in order to equip our winery with the latest technologies and, of course, to make better wine. Additionally, we hope to prepare the business for the future and the 5th generation!"

Rioja, Spain
Rioja is located in the northern part of Spain and takes its name from the river ‘Rio Oja’ (a tributary of the Ebro). This region was the first to receive the DOCa status, the highest quality designation for Spanish wine regions. The style of the wines varies greatly, largely due to the different soil types and microclimates. For example, on the left bank of the river (where the famous wine village of Haro is located, among others), you mainly find calcareous soils. Meanwhile, on the right bank, where Bodegas Ilurce is located, more iron-rich clay can be found. The bedrock here lies much deeper than on the other bank. The thick layer of reddish clay (the color comes from the oxidation of iron) is poor, which forces the vines to work hard to obtain enough nutrients. As a result, the vines produce fewer grapes but put all their energy into the clusters they do produce. Additionally, this soil gives the wines their distinctive freshness.
