Everything You Need to Know About the Tempranillo Grape

Read all about its origins, flavor, where it is grown, and how to pair it with food!

You may have heard of it, or maybe not. But you definitely know the wines made from this Spanish grape variety! The famous red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero are crafted from it. Tempranillo is known for its aromas of red fruit, firm tannins, and pleasant yet moderate acidity. Through oak aging, not only do the tannins soften, but the wine also develops its signature smooth structure. High-quality tempranillo wines are true aging wines, capable of being stored for up to 20 years.

What Does Tempranillo Taste Like?

In terms of flavor, tempranillo offers a mix of juicy red and black fruits, a spicy touch, and subtle oak notes if it has been aged in barrels. Young tempranillos are fruity and smooth. The Ilurce Rioja Joven is an example of this! The vineyards of this wine are located at a fairly high altitude, giving the Rioja a freshness that makes it irresistible. In addition to the young Rioja styles (joven), there are also aged versions. These have more complex aromas of tobacco, cocoa, and dried fruit, like our Marques de Tomares Rioja Crianza. This wine has undergone 12 months of oak aging.

Where is Tempranillo Grown?

Tempranillo feels completely at home in Spain, and you can taste it. In Rioja, it takes on an elegant, refined style with notes of red fruit, vanilla, and leather. In Ribera del Duero, it is more powerful and deeper in flavor, with plenty of black fruit and spiciness. Even in Portugal, the tempranillo grape finds a home. Here, it goes by other names, such as aragonez and tinta roriz. It produces robust, structured wines. You can find it in wines like the Bojador Tinto Alentejo or the FitaPreta Vinhos Alentejo Tinto.

How to Pair Tempranillo with Food?

Tempranillo is also a winner at the table. It pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, spicy tapas, or a plate of Spanish cheeses. Craving a glass for your snack? A piece of Manchego, some chorizo, and a good glass of tempranillo, and you’re immediately transported to Spain. Looking for a recipe?
